South Salem's Le Chateau Closes After More Than 40 Years

Le Chateau in South Salem has closed its doors after more than 40 years in business.
The restaurant has served as a special occasion destination for years, hosting weddings, Valentine's Day romance and Christmas Eve dinners in the elegant estate overlooking the Hudson Valley hills. The last dinner was served on Sunday.
A Tudor-style country manor on a sprawling 30 acres, the building was built by J.P. Morgan in 1907 as a gift for his pastor, the Rev. William S. Rainsford. In 1973, Yves and Denise Lozach turned the estate into Le Chateau, a fine dining destination serving cuisine from their native France, such as escargot and roasted Chateaubriand for two. In 2011 JP's Lounge opened upstairs, a more casual bar offering wine by the glass, live music and small French-inspired plates. Marc Woll was the executive chef.
It has remained a family-run business. The Lozachs' daughter, Monique Jaffre Lozach, is the current owner and CEO. A spokesperson declined to comment on the closing.
Le Chateau was among the first French fine dining restaurants in the Lower Hudson Valley. Men wore jackets, greeted by a maitre d's graceful welcome, with classical piano and clinking Champagne: Le Chateau was vintage elegance.
"We've watched in Manhattan as all the 'Les' and 'Las' have all disappeared," said chef Peter X. Kelly, whose first job in the restaurant business was at Laurent in New York City. "It's a shame because there's something very special about putting on a jacket and going to a restaurant."
The transition to more a casual restaurant experience in the last decade has delivered seasonal dishes at reasonable weekday-appropriate prices, making gourmet food more widely accessible. But the shift decimated institutions like Le Chateau, Auberge Argenteuil in Hartsdale and Maison Lafitte in Briarcliff Manor.
"You'll see me having pizza and bone marrow with everybody," said Kelly. "But it's also my anniversary this weekend and that's not where I'll be going."
Is this closing a sign of the more casual times? Kelly said he is worried there's a whole generation growing up that hasn't experienced fine dining, but Albert Bensimon, captain at La Panetiere in Rye, sees things differently.
At La Panetiere, one of Westchester's last fine French dining restaurants, "business is booming," Bensimon said, especially when a celebratory night out is in order. "We were booked for five straight days for Valentine's."
It was unclear whether future weddings were booked at Le Chateau, but Journal News readers shared memories of their own weddings on Facebook.
"I was just going to make our annual anniversary reservation," wrote Michelle Booth Rizzo. "At least I have my wedding pictures."
There is no word yet on what will become of the restaurant or estate, though Kelly and Bensimon both speculate it might continue to serve as a wedding venue.
"Looking at Le Chateau and that property, there's something very magical about the place," Kelly says.
