North Salem Community Rallies To Help Twins Who Lost Mother
Members of the community are working to help 19-year-old twins and North Salem High School graduates Brendan and Michael Less after the passing of their mother, Terry, 56, of Somers on Monday.
Mitch Lanyi, a friend of the Less brothers who has known them since he moved to North Salem in seventh grade, set up
a GoFundMe donation page to help cover the cost of their mother's funeral.
Lanyi added that the threshold for the funeral has been reached but that the difference in funds will be for their general needs.
The fundraiser has a goal of $30,000. As of Thursday afternoon, $22,286 has been raised with donations from 148 people in just one day.
The trio graduated from North Salem High School last year. The brothers are currently attending Keene State College, Lanyi added.
The passing of the twins' mother comes as an additional blow, as they already lost their father, Lawrence, in 2008.
Lanyi said that he was "devastated" when he heard of Terry Less' death. He added that he can't imagine what they are going through.
Recalling his friendship with the brother, Lanyi mentioned that he played baseball with both when he was in middle school and played lacrosse with Brendan Less from eighth grade through their senior year of high school.
Lanyi also explained that his friends do not have family members locally but that relatives from New Jersey are visiting.
Interest in the fundraiser has spread. The North Salem Athletic Booster Club sent out an email Wednesday night mentioning the campaign and recalling Terry Less' presence.
"North Salem is an amazing small community that always helps those in need," the email states. "We are reaching out to the North Salem athletic community to ask for your support for two boys who have suffered the tragic loss of their only remaining parent, their mother, Terry Less."
The Booster Club's email also recalls the types of sports that the Less brothers played.
"Both boys were multi-sport athletes throughout their entire life in North Salem. Mike and Brendan played soccer, baseball, basketball and lacrosse. Terry, although a single working mother, found the time to be an active Booster club member and volunteer."
Visiting hours are scheduled for 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at Clark Associates Funeral Home in Katonah. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, which is in Somers.

Letter: North Salem Schools Need More Transparency
The North Salem Board of Education refuses to allow the public to review the entire budget prior to board approval. Once the entire budget is presented to the public it is too late to make any changes.
As North Salem enters what is a three-month process in preparing and receiving approval of a budget for the 2014-15 fiscal year, they once again have prepared a budget calendar which makes the presentation to the public of the entire budget a meaningless action. By the
time the budget is presented to the public in its entirety for the first time it has already been approved by the board. According to the board it is then too late to make any subsequent adjustments before the public vote on the budget.
Even though we are at the very beginning
of the budget process and there is more than adequate opportunity to make changes to the budget preparation schedule, the board and the superintendent
have refused to change the schedule so that the entire budget, as it may have been adjusted during the budget process, can be presented in its entirety to
the public.
This makes the public presentation a complete sham; and the comments by the public unimportant to the board.

North Salem Foundation For Learning Holding Benefit Dinner
A benefit dinner for the North Salem Foundation for Learning and North Salem High School International Club will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. at Vox Bar and Restaurant.
The dinner will help benefit international cultural experiences for students from the International Club.

Police Issue 75 Tickets In Distracted Driving Detail On I-684
Croton Falls Firefighters Assist In Battling Blaze In Southeast
Firefighters spent Tuesday afternoon battling a three-alarm blaze at a storage building located on a farm in Southeast.
The farm is located off of North Salem Road.
Firefighters involved, either on site or near by, came from Brewster, Croton Falls, Lake Carmel, Ridgefield, Mahopac, Somers and Putnam Lake.
A TransCare ambulance was observed at the scene and the Putnam County Sheriff's Department was limiting vehicular traffic on the main adjacent road.
Smoke was seen billowing from multiple sides of the building. There is also a strong smell from the blaze.
Brewster Fire Chief Thomas Leather, who gave a recap of the response to reporters, said that his fire department was dispatched at 11:08 a.m. for what was initially reported to be a smoke investigation. The incident was later re-dispatched as a structure fire.
The building did not contain livestock and there were no injuries, Leather told reporters, adding that it used as the farm's repair shop. Leather said that the cause of the fire under investigation.
A vehicle, also severely damaged, could be seen inside the building.
Westchester County Runners Spring Forward At NYC Half Marathon
Runners from Westchester County got off to a flying start for the spring running season in Sunday’s New York City Half Marathon.
Cathrine Wolden of Pound Ridge won the 40-44 women’s age group in 1:24:15. She was 53 among women. There were 19,455 finishers, and 10,150 women finishers. Wolden won her age group by more than five minutes.
Kathy Zavarella of Chappaqua was fifth in 130:35, and Dianne Leitner of Yorktown Heights was seventh in 1:32:19.
Some other top finishers included Bette Clark of Yonkers, who was eighth in the 55-59 age group in 1:42:35, and Tami Yatabe of White Plains, who was sixth in the 70-74 women’s age group in 2:31:32.
Despite an erratic training schedule during the brutal winter, runners found time to get fit for Sunday’s race, which took place under seasonable conditions. The race started in Central Park and finished in Manhattan.
